The Kirky silverware roller is a failed alpha prototype of silverware rolling device. The purpose was to load, roll, and dispense a silverware wrap.
The Problem
A Little to Kirky wanted to help a member Ted Dodas' family and their restaurant by minimizing the amount of work needed put into the menial tasks and allowing them to increase the customer service. We decided to tackle the time consuming task of rolling silverware into napkins for setting a table.
Our Solution
Silverware Loading
The silverware is loaded into gravity fed clips. For the alpha prototype, these clips were not meant to hold more than five pieces of silverware. This picture below shows the prototype.
Silverware Dispensing
The clips are loaded into the center drum which then rotates. A rigid bar attached to the case then knocks the silverware out
Silverware Rolling
The silverware drops into a trough with a napkin suspended over it. the silverware pushes the napkin into the trough, which then rotates rolling the napkins and then a linear actuator pushes the roll out.
Napkins
The napkin manipulator, no pictured above, was not made due to budget constraints. However a model picture of it is offered below. It Operates using a fan to life the napkins, which are then grabbed and pulled to the spot of the roller.
The Napkin basket is the placed where napkins are loaded into the machine. It was design to be aided by a component not yet designed.
The Napkin arm has gone through three iterations of design to minimize the overall size and initial inaccuracies. The claw is used to both cut the airflow by blocking the nozzle and used to grip the napkin and pull it free.
